Helping young or vulnerable people learn about chatbots

Like many parents, I’ve been watching how quickly AI chatbots have become a part of everyday life for teenagers. Recently, I noticed my teenage daughter using Gemini chat extensively. From friendship advice to homework, and even coaching them on how to keep personal plans hidden from parents. It was really concerning.

AI chatbots feel like friendly, hyper-smart companions, available 24 hours, to glaze you (to use teenage vernacular). For young, neurodivergent and vulnerable people, it’s so easy for them to become over-reliant or take AI advice at face value.

To help my teen understand the risks, I created an Easy Read Fact Sheet: Using AI Chatbots Safely. It breaks down:

  • What chatbots are

  • How they work

  • Simple safety rules

Whether you're a parent, a carer, or an organisation looking to support digitally vulnerable groups, feel free to read and share it.
The Easy Read fact sheet is available in online and as a PDF.
